Kevin’s Wake Up Moment

Kevin Potts is an internet entrepreneur, one of the new breed of (mainly) men who are forging new careers on the Internet. When I thought of such people in the past I imagined them to be hard-nosed businessmen whose entire purpose in life was making a lot of money. Not that there’s anything actually wrong with making money, but I grew up with a rather jaundiced view of the rich, believing that those who have money have no interest in helping others. That may be true for some. But Kevin gives the lie to this.

His last job, before studying methods on the net and setting up a training school for people who want to use this gret new technology to improve their situations, was as the Minister of Cambridge Community Church. He did an eight year stint there spreading the Gospel and caring for the community.

He began to feel that he needed to make a change to his life. But where to go? What to do? After his career record he felt ‘virtually unemployable’. Then a strange, uninvited package dropped through his postbox. It contained a lot of writing and a Chinese fortune cookie. He binned it all and went on with his life. But he had already begun talking to his wife about making some kind of change, and she fully supported him, whatever it turned out to be.

Then one day a little card dropped though his postbox, a second message to follow the fortune cookie. This sent him to a website where it claimed he could learn to make money using the internet. He went on a training course and realised, yes, this was the thing.

Last September he opened his own training academy, and is making enough money to support his family. Soon he will have more than enough. When I talked to him he made it clear that making money is fun, but that he did not imagine that this was the last job he would have. He feels the need to share this money, to begin to do more for some of the people in the world who are most needy. He hasn’t stopped being a Christian, camels and eye of needles notwithstanding! He knows you can be both rich and caring of others, and is an example to us all of someone who is actually ‘good’ (and rich) without being boring (and selfish).
