It’s not an easy thing: learning to live with someone else again. I am in the middle of it, and I am not finding it at all easy, to tell the truth. I had been living on my own for eight years, most of them filled with a wonderful sense of independence, just a few times when I wished I were not so alone, not so dependent on my own abilities.

This week has been the first for four weeks that I have not been working every evening and at the weekends phoning Open University alumni to try to raise funds for the university’s student funds. And I might have thought that things would have been lots more relaxed.

Like many thousands of English people I watched England play USA last night in the World Cup. It started well and both teams played well – but it was marred by a dreadful fumble by the English goalkeeper

Do you feel optimistic? I try hard not to, but what with waking up every day cheerful, having a fairly happy disposition and a new partner who thinks I’m lovely, well, it’s difficult to be miserable. I would be if I could, I am sure. I really find optimists hard to bear.
