Hi Joanna,
Thank you for your comments and for signing our petition.
It sounds like you are doing well now and I am really glad that you are.
I am not arguing for a nanny state, where politicians decide and do everything for us. Apart from anything else, I want to be free to make my own sometimes spectacular mistakes.
However, on the days when life all goes so terribly wrong that I can’t fix it myself, I need help.
I guess a bit like the NHS, when I am sick or hurt I go to the doctor or hospital and I am treated. Regardless of money or circumstance, the NHS will do its best to help me back on to my feet. They don’t try to run my life, but they do try and enable me to live it.
In terms of my health needs, there is a law that says I can only fall so far before someone must at least offer to help me. I want the same compassionate approach to be extended to people’s wider social needs as well, particularly regarding safe and secure accommodation. There should, in my view, be a base line, below which no one is allowed to fall without at least the offer of help.

Hi Mark, I so do chime with you on the issue of homelessness, though like Jon, I am not convinced that politicians could solve the problem without creating another somewhere else. I, like you, was once homeless myself and with a two year-old child, when I returned from Germany and a bad marriage. Though I liked London, I knew straight away that I neither needed to live there, nor was it advisable as I had nothing. I got on a bus and came to Cambridge where I went fruit picking to earn money while I sorted myself out. I have lived in Cambridge ever since.
I think that as well as helping everyone we can, each individual must also be encouraged to help themsellves, and not rely on local or national government to “fix things”. It is fixing things for ourselves and others that brings the biggest rewards in terms of life affirming experiences.
I will sign the petition now, and wish you all the best in your life, Joanna

Hi Jon, I believe that we as a community do need to change our behaviour. We do need to apply our resources in better ways, including our cash. Our politicians were elected to represent us and therefore that is what they should do.
I realise that trying to get millions of people mobilised towards one end is a big mountain to hope to climb, but the alternative to trying is doing nothing. I cannot just sit with my feet up and pretend things are OK when they are not.
I know that on my own I will achieve very little, so my only course of action has to be to reach out and invite others to join me. I know many people are unhappy with how things are, but feel helpless and powerless to make them better.
History shows that when groups of like minded people get together and apply themselves to bringing about change, they can do it.
If the only change we were able to bring about was to enable people to really start to collaborate, imagine what would happen. Millions of people with one objective. In this case, that there should be on one left on the street at night, who didn’t choose to be there.
There are already solutions out there, but not enough people demanding that this be a priority in our society, or indeed across the world.
I think it is a simple demand and one that we all know is right. Each of us has a little power in our hands, like little rocks. If we put all of our little bits of power together we will have a lot of power. All those rocks will make a mountain. We just have to decide where we move our mountain too, a place we all believe is right or a place we all recognise is wrong.
We just need as many people as we can find, like you and me, to use the little bit of power they have, towards the same goal.
A law demanding that people wear seat belts, when they are driving, was unimaginable once. It is second nature to us all now. Why is the plight of the homeless less important. I hope you will sign our petition and join us. The more of us that there are, then the better chance we have of making things better for everyone.
Best wishes and thank you for taking the time to write.
Mark
